Eight members of the banned group Students Islamic Movement of India or SIMI escaped from a high security prison in Bhopal late on Sunday night after killing a guard. Three of them had been part of an identical jailbreak three years ago.
Around 2 am at the Bhopal Central Jail, the terrorists tied up one guard and allegedly killed a head constable, Rama Shankar, by slitting his throat with steel plate and glass shards. Then they fashioned ropes out of bedsheets to climb the boundary walls. For their plan, they chose Diwali night when firecrackers would have obscured all other sound.
The jail superintendent and three security personnel have been suspended.
